3.14 (aka Pie Day) is often during March Break so I don’t often get to bake pies with my students. But this year, I decided that we were going to bake some pies ahead of the break so that they could make something at home for their friends, family and loved ones if they wanted to (or for marks, that’s the only way to get them to cook/bake at home sometimes).
My students and I made quite a collection of pies, but because I dropped the ball, on the first day of pie making everyone’s dough shrunk (those looks of disappointment and betrayal will haunt me for a long time!).

I was quite upset that a lot of the pies didn’t turn out. How does someone with this much teaching and pastry experience mess this up that much? I wasn’t going to accept defeat, so after the babies were tucked in for the night, I decided to make the dough all over again. It turned out that the dough recipe that we used was fine, it just needed some time to rest and relax. I felt redeemed! The next day, I was forgiven and things were back to normal. All in all, I think we did a great job with the pies!
With my week off, I wanted to at least film a pie video so we could have it for reference in the future. As luck would have it, we made a trip to Ikea where I found a gigantic pie plate. It was a sign to make something delicious like a coconut cream pie (my fav) with it.
